RAISING THE STANDARD: HOW KENYA NATIONAL POLICE DT SACCO DOMINATED THE 104TH USHIRIKA DAY AWARDS

A clean sweep at the 104th Ushirika Day Gala Awards reaffirmed Kenya National Police DT SACCO’s position as one of the country’s leading financial co-operatives, reflecting decades of prudent leadership, sustained growth, and an unwavering commitment to delivering value to its members

In the cooperative movement, excellence is rarely defined by a single year of outstanding performance. It is earned through consistency, responsible leadership, financial discipline, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of members. Few institutions embody these qualities more convincingly than Kenya National Police DT SACCO, whose remarkable performance at the 104th Ushirika Day national awards served as a powerful affirmation of its position among Kenya’s leading tier one deposit-taking savings and credit co-operative societies (SACCOs). Ranked the third overall tier one Sacco in Kenya in respect to asset base  by the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), Kenya National DT SACCO lived up to its tradition of strong performance during Ushirika Day celebrations that it has   established  over the years,  by clinching six top awards.  In 2025, it scooped the prestigious ‘Overall Best Managed in the country.’

Founded to promote financial security and economic empowerment among its members, the SACCO, has evolved into one of the country’s largest and most respected cooperative financial institutions today, mainly after opening its common bond to accommodate: civil servants, employees of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and other disciplined forces as well as the business community among others.  Through prudent management, continuous innovation, and an expanding suite of financial products and services, the institution has consistently demonstrated that SACCOs remain a vital pillar of Kenya’s financial ecosystem. Today, with assets valued at more than Kshs.  66 billion, a loan portfolio exceeding Kshs. 57 billion, and a membership exceeding 76,000, the SACCO continues to set the pace for growth, stability, and member-focused financial solutions.

That leadership was once again brought into sharp focus during the world co-operatives (Ushirika) Day celebrations held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Uhuru Park Grounds in Nairobi. Marking the 104th edition of the annual celebration under the global theme, “Cooperatives for a PeacefulWorld,” the event brought together thousands of cooperative members, sector leaders, policymakers, and development partners to celebrate more than a century of the cooperative movement’s contribution to Kenya’s economic transformation.

The celebrations attracted key government leaders, including Deputy President H.E Prof. Kithure Kindiki, EGH and Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Co-operatives and MSMEs, FCPA Hon. Wycliffe A. Oparanya, EGH who both underscored the indispensable role that cooperatives continue to play in driving financial inclusion, creating wealth, supporting farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and strengthening communities across the country. The event also featured exhibitions by leading cooperative institutions, showcasing technological innovations, digital financial services, and solutions designed to improve members’ financial wellbeing.

Against this highly competitive backdrop, Kenya National Police DT SACCO emerged as one of the biggest winners, delivering an outstanding performance that underscored its reputation for operational excellence and sound governance. During the gala awards presented by Hon. Oparanya, the tier one SACCO secured six top national honours, including: first position as the Best Performing Deposit-Taking SACCO countrywide, first position as the Best DT SACCO in Capitalization and first position as the Best DT SACCO in Deposit Management.

The institution also earned second position in both member management and credit management, and third position as the Most Improved Deposit-Taking SACCO, cementing its standing as one of Kenya’s most successful cooperative institutions.

Sustained growth:

While awards offer public recognition, they are ultimately a reflection of measurable performance. Kenya National Police DT SACCO’s 2025 audited financial results reveal an institution experiencing sustained and strategic growth. Total assets grew by 11 per cent to Kshs. 66.4 billion.  Additionally, the institution distributed Kshs.  4.1 billion in member returns, maintaining an attractive dividend rate of 17 per cent on share capital and 11 per cent interest on members’ deposits—figures that continue to reinforce its reputation for delivering tangible value to its membership.

Equally significant has been the SACCO’s expanding reach. Once primarily serving members of the National Police Service, the institution has now opened its doors to the wider public, allowing many Kenyans to become its members through a minimal share capital of just Kshs.  500. This strategic shift marks an important milestone in the SACCO’s evolution, extending its proven financial model to a broader segment of the population, while reinforcing its commitment to inclusive economic empowerment.

Behind these achievements lies a deliberate culture of strong governance, innovation, and member-centric leadership. Under the stewardship of National Chairman David Sohelo Mategwa, OGW, HSC, DSA, ICUDE and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Solomon Atsiaya, the SACCO has consistently invested in strengthening governance structures, embracing digital transformation, improving operational efficiency, and developing products that respond to the changing financial needs of its members. Their leadership has helped position the institution not only as a financial services provider, but also as a trusted partner in wealth creation and long-term financial security.

The success of Kenya National Police DT SACCO also reflects the enduring strength of Kenya’s cooperative movement. As financial institutions continue to navigate an increasingly dynamic economic environment, SACCOs remain uniquely positioned to foster inclusive growth by placing members at the centre of their operations. Their ability to mobilize savings, provide affordable credit, and create opportunities for wealth accumulation continues to make them indispensable drivers of national development.

The awards earned at the 104th Ushirika Day Gala Awards are, in many ways, the culmination of years of disciplined leadership, prudent financial stewardship, and an unwavering commitment to member prosperity. Yet beyond the trophies and national recognition lies a far greater achievement, earning the trust of more than 76,000 members who continue to entrust the SACCO with their financial aspirations.

As Kenya’s cooperative movement embraces a future shaped by digital innovation, financial inclusion, and sustainable growth, Kenya National Police DT SACCO has demonstrated that true leadership is not measured solely by balance sheets or industry accolades. It is measured by the lives transformed, the opportunities created, and the confidence instilled in every member who chooses the cooperative path to financial freedom.

The 104th Ushirika Day celebrations served as a reminder that cooperatives remain one of Kenya’s most powerful engines of economic empowerment. For Kenya National Police DT SACCO, however, the six national awards are not the destination, they are another milestone in a journey defined by excellence. They reaffirm a legacy built on trust, resilience, and innovation, while setting an even higher benchmark for the cooperative sector. As the institution continues to grow its reach and welcome more Kenyans into its fold, it is not merely celebrating success; it is helping shape the future of cooperative finance in Kenya—one member, one community, and one achievement at a time.
