President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the upgraded inland container depot in Embakasi, Nairobi, mid December. The ultra modern facility was upgraded at a cost of Kshs. 22 billion. As an incentive, all the local and foreign exporters who will transport their goods using the facility will enjoy a discount of fifty percent.
One of the key benefits of the upgraded depot is that it will facilitate seamless clearance and movement of cargo. In turn, this will enhance the operations of various players in the transport industry including freight forwarders and shippers.
During the second phase of the standard gauge railway (SGR), the inland container depot will be linked to the line. This will hence connect Mombasa with countries in the region like Uganda. Consequently, it will boost Kenya in her bid to improve the movement and management of cargo locally and regionally.
