Nakumatt Loses Mega Branch

Woe hits Nakumatt once again as the Kenyan supermarket chain has lost its Mega Branch situated along Uhuru Highway. The closure of the store will render a major financial blow on the retailer as it was the most profitable branch in terms of sales.

Mr. Peter Kahi, the chain’s administrator says that “The lease on the property is set to expire on September 30 and the landlord wishes to redevelop the property.” The supermarket and all its tenants are to vacate the premises upon expiry of the lease.

The property houses a Safaricom support centre, bookstore, gift shop, salon, chemist and ATMs among several other businesses. The Nakumatt Mega branch opened in 1992 and has been in business for the past 26 years. The staff at the branch will be redeployed to other outlets countrywide. This is another major blow to the supermarket chain after it lost its Ukay Centre branch in recent ongoing demolitions conducted by NEMA leaving the troubled retailer with only 5 branches.
