Mount Kenya University To Partner With United Nations Volunteers Programme To Deploy Student Volunteers In UN system

Last week, the Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, Mr. Olivier Adam, has delivered a public lecture at Mount Kenya University main campus in Thika, Kenya, titled “Building Partnerships Between Universities and Volunteerism for SDGs achievement In East Africa”.

The University is partnering with UNV to provide volunteering opportunities for its students within the UN system. The main goal of the partnership is to enhance the capacity and engagement of youth in development issues, as key actors of change.

‘I am delighted that this is my first visit to Kenya in my capacity as Executive Coordinator of UNV, where I am discussing strong and long-standing partnership between Kenya and UNV’, said Mr. Adam during the lecture.

The Public lecture is the climax of a two-week mission by the head of UNV to the three East African countries of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania that begins on 18th March 2019.

Mr. Adam was accompanied by UNV East and Southern Africa Regional Manager, Mr. Njoya Tikum and the Vice Chancellor of Mount Kenya University, Prof. Stanley Waudo among other High-level representatives from the United Nations’ and the Universities’ fraternities. The lecture has explore the role of Universities and relevance of volunteerism in fast tracking the realization of the SDGs in East Africa.

“I encourage our students to join UN volunteers as a way of not only giving back to the community but also to gain practical knowledge and exposure. With this I urge students to offer their services, skills and knowledge in fields which are in related to their academic and professional programs. Volunteerism requires dedication, commitment and social behavior change”, said Prof. Stanley Waudo
