In an industry where inclusion is increasingly becoming the measure of meaningful impact, BIMAS Kenya Limited is showing what happens when finance is designed around people, purpose and possibility.
At BIMAS, financial inclusion is not just about putting money in people’s hands. It is about understanding what that money can unlock – a farmer’s next harvest, a young person’s first enterprise, a woman’s growing business, a family’s better home, or an SME’s next stage of growth.
This is the space BIMAS has occupied for decades, creating meaningful impact for economically productive Kenyans who are often underserved by conventional financial institutions. As a NonDeposit-Taking Credit Provider (NDTCP) regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya, BIMAS delivers responsible, accessible and relevant financial solutions to individuals, households, farmers and businesses, particularly at the grassroots.
Its diverse portfolio reflects this commitment to inclusivity, with solutions spanning business loans, agribusiness loans, consumption loans, green financing and insurance premium financing. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, BIMAS seeks to meet customers at different stages of their financial journeys, helping them address immediate needs while building towards greater resilience and prosperity.
That commitment was recently recognised on a significant industry platform. At the inaugural AMFI-K Inclusive Finance Industry Awards (IFIA) 2026, BIMAS emerged Winner in Best Housing Microfinance Initiative and Winner in Sustainability, ESG and WASH Initiative. The institution also took 1st Runner-Up positions in Best SME Finance Initiative, Best Digital Financial Inclusion Initiative and Best Women Economic Empowerment Initiative.

Five recognitions across five important areas of inclusive finance, but one powerful message: BIMAS is creating impact where it matters. For BIMAS CEO Dr Patrick Gathondu, the recognition is a reflection of the institution’s long-standing purpose. “We play in the space of inclusive finance. As an organisation, it has always been our desire to create meaningful impact for the people we serve. We continuously strive to develop products and solutions that speak to and respond to the needs and aspirations of our customers.” And for him, the achievement ultimately belongs to the people at the heart of the institution’s work: “This win is dedicated to our customers. ” That customer-first philosophy is evident in BIMAS’ approach to housing, enterprise development, digital finance, women’s empowerment and sustainability.
Through its Nyumba Bora affordable housing initiative, developed in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, BIMAS is helping make better and more dignified housing attainable for underserved households. Its recognition in Sustainability, ESG and WASH highlights another defining dimension of its work. BIMAS understands that financial wellbeing cannot be separated from the environment in which
people live and work. Through solutions supporting water tanks, improved sanitation, solar energy, biogas, water purification and sustainable agriculture, the institution is connecting finance with healthier, greener and more resilient communities.
This is ESG translated from policy into everyday impact—helping customers invest in solutions that improve livelihoods, protect the environment and strengthen communities. The same commitment extends to SMEs, agriculture, women and youth. Through enterprise and agribusiness financing, BIMAS supports businesses and productive value chains that generate income and employment. Its passion for youth empowerment is driven by the belief that young people must have the opportunity, financial access and tools to participate meaningfully in Kenya’s economy. Women, equally, remain central to its inclusion agenda, given their powerful role in enterprise, household welfare and community development.
Digital innovation further expands this reach, with solutions such as digi@30 making financial services more convenient and accessible through mobile technology. For BIMAS, however, these awards are not a destination. They are a springboard. The next chapter is about scaling impact – reaching more customers, deepening digital financial inclusion, expanding SME and agribusiness financing, growing green finance, strengthening ESG and WASH interventions, and creating even more opportunities for women and young people. Because the ambition is not simply to become bigger. It is to make the impact bigger. The true measure of inclusive finance is ultimately found beyond the balance sheet: in businesses that grow, farmers who become more productive, young people who find pathways to economic opportunity, women who build stronger enterprises, families who improve their homes, and communities that become more resilient.
