PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN WATER.ORG AND AMFI-K CONTINUES TO BEAR FRUITS

Since 2019, Water.org and AMFI-K have transformed the lives of many Kenyans by enabling them to access clean water and sanitation

By George Gichuki

The need for households to access safe water for drinking and sanitation cannot be over emphasized. Water is life. Indeed without sufficient supply of clean water, engaging in economic activities – for instance agribusiness – would be a daunting task for man.  In the same vein, without water, it would be hard to access basic needs like health and education, while efforts to enhance food security would be jeopardized.

It is against this background that the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya (AMFI-K) in partnership with Water.org launched the Water Credit Adoption (WCAD) programme in 2019.  The objective of this programme is to build the capacity of microfinance banks and institutions (which are members of AMFI-K) to develop and scale up water supply and sanitation products. Kenya is the first country in Africa to roll out this programme.

According to a survey by Water.org, fifteen per cent of Kenyans rely on unimproved water sources, such as ponds, shallow wells and rivers. By the same token, forty one per cent of Kenyans lack basic sanitation facilities. This calls for interventions to address this gap.

The launch of WCAD   was preceded by a research that was commissioned by AMFI-K with the view of gathering information on how to develop   water and sanitation products in Kenya strategically. This information covered water supply and sanitation, financial environments, the socio-economic status of clients as well as the local demand. The budgetary support of WCAD is provided by Water.org.
