Mbula Munyasya, Erick Kanumbi, Givonce Otieno, Kenneth Kiprono and Jackson Habagusaba have won Kshs. 1 million each in the second draw for the Shinda Mamili Kama Bigwa campaign by Safaricom. Each will also receive an additional Kshs.250,000 from the Safaricom Foundation to support a community project of their choice. The community fund guarantees that the promotion benefits the entire community, in addition to the individual winners.
Elated
The first winner, Kenneth Kiprono, a 48-year-old businessman in Eldoret had seen the campaign advertised and decided to try his luck. He owns a bookshop in Eldoret town and hopes to use his prize money to add stock. He has been a long-time customer of Safaricom and has never changed his line. He plans to use the additional Kshs. 250,000 community fund to support and resource the library of his local school. “I was over the moon when I received the call from Safaricom. I had never won anything in my life before, so I was so elated by the news. This came at a great time as schools in the area are reopening, and I need to replenish the stock of my bookstore. I am thankful to Safaricom for this tremendous opportunity and will continue to serve as Safaricom customer for the foreseeable future,” he said.
Givonce Otieno is an aspiring poultry farmer who is a teacher by profession. However, he is currently unemployed. Givonce hails from Gem in Siaya county. He plans to use the prize money to advance his sugarcane farming and start a poultry farming project. He also plans to buy water tanks for his local primary school using the additional Kshs. 250,000 from Safaricom Foundation.
Jackson Habagusaba, originally from Uganda, is a 35-year-old shoe seller who owns a store in Machakos town. Jackson moved from Uganda seven years ago looking for a better business and working environment. He is planning to expand his business and consider beginning other projects, such as poultry farming.

The different stories of these individuals really illuminate the reason we do this. Our purpose is to transform the lives of our customers so that they go on to do great things in their lives. We are but a conduit that provides the necessary tools for Kenyans to Shine.”
Mary Mbula Munyasya is a 32-year-old single mother of three from Kiambu. She originally hails from Mwea. She currently works at a club. When she received the news of her win, she was skeptical . She thought it was a scam. After receiving more calls from Safaricom, she got convinced. Mary is planning to construct pit latrines in her rural town centre in Mwea with the additional Kshs. 250,000.
The fifth winner, Erick Kanumbi, a 23-year-old decorator from Nanyuki had to stop his studies in engineering due to financial constraints. He hopes to use his prize money to settle his fees arrears and complete his degree. Erick learned about the campaign through Safaricom’s SMS notifications, which informed him of his entry into the draw.
To participate, customers need to transact on M-Pesa or purchase the Shine Kenya bundles. For every Kshs. 200 transacted on M-Pesa and any Shine Kenya bundle purchase of Kshs. 20 and above, customers will earn an entry into the weekly draw.
