BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: HOW MENTOR SACCO IS EMPOWERING TEACHERS TO BUILD A  BETTER FUTURE

Silverio Ngari Mwaniki’s powerful testimony on financial stability, dignity, and the future of teachers

For over ten years, Silverio Ngari Mwaniki has remained a proud member of Mentor Sacco, a journey he describes not simply as membership in a financial institution, but as belonging to a system that has consistently stood with teachers through every stage of life.  As an educator, Silverio understands the silent realities many teachers face. Behind the respect associated with the profession are responsibilities that often stretch beyond the limits of a monthly salary, school fees, medical emergencies, family obligations, development projects, and the constant desire to secure a better future.

It is within these realities that Mentor Sacco became an important pillar in his life. According to Silverio, one of the greatest advantages of the tier one  Sacco is its accessibility. Members are allowed to begin saving with affordable monthly contributions, making it easier even for ordinary teachers to join and gradually build financial strength. Over time, these savings open doors to loans that  transform lives.

Friendly process

What impressed him most was the simplicity of the process and the community spirit behind it. Teachers support one another as guarantors and witnesses, creating an environment built on trust and collective growth.

For Silverio, the Sacco’s impact goes far beyond access to money. He describes it as an institution that responds to the everyday realities of members’ lives –  whether it is paying school fees, handling emergencies, purchasing land, supporting development projects, or helping families survive difficult moments. “If you want to buy land, if you are sick, if your child needs to go back to school and you don’t have money, when you run to Mentor Sacco, they are able to give you money within a very short period of time,” he said.

As he reflected on this year’s members’ education and  information days (MID), Silverio praised the forum as a crucial platform for financial education and empowerment. According to him, MIDs  give  members an opportunity to learn how to manage finances responsibly, utilize loans wisely, prepare for retirement, and grow their shares for long-term security.

 Financial literacy

But it was his honest reflection on the financial challenges that occasionally  face  teachers that made his testimony particularly moving. Silverio expressed concern that many young teachers enter employment without adequate financial literacy. Excited by their first salaries and access to loans, many end up trapped in cycles of debt and financial pressure within a short time.

He believes this lack of financial stability eventually affects not only teachers’ personal lives, but also their performance in the classroom. “A teacher who is not financially stable  cannot  delivery  content to the learners effectively,” he said. It was a deeply human observation, one that connected financial wellness to emotional well-being, family stability, and the quality of education delivered to learners.

Silverio further challenged Mentor Sacco to continue innovating in ways that directly uplift the living  standards   of  members. He applauded the  launch  of new products such as the golden  account  and makao plus, noting that they  will  help members achieve growth they never imagined possible.

Bold vision

At the same time, he encouraged the Sacco to invest more in practical member support tools, including brochures and marketing materials that  they  can use to confidently introduce others to the institution. “ In my view, when you are doing marketing, you need brochures that carry the vision, the mission and objectives of the Sacco,” he explained.

He also proposed a bold vision for the future –  a land ownership programme  where the Sacco acquires affordable land, subdivides it, and enables members to own plots and eventually become landlords themselves. For Silverio, such initiatives would not only create wealth, but also empower teachers to dream bigger.

His testimony ultimately painted the picture of a man who believes deeply in the transformative power of cooperative finance. Not because of theory or advertising, but because he has lived the experience himself. To him, Mentor Sacco is not just helping members survive financially. It is helping them reclaim confidence, stability, and hope for the future.
