When Martha Wambui Kamau graduated and began her teaching career in 2017, she carried with her the same aspirations shared by many young professionals entering the job market: financial independence, stability and the hope of building a secure future. What she did not know then was that a decision made early in her career would become one of the most significant contributors to her personal and financial growth.Today, the Naivasha-based teacher looks back on that decision with gratitude.
Shortly after joining the teaching profession, Martha was introduced to Mentor Sacco by a fellow teacher from Githengi Primary School. Impressed by the advice she received and encouraged by the opportunities available through the Sacco, she enrolled immediately. At the time, she was just beginning her professional journey and had yet to establish a strong financial footing.Eight years later, the results speak for themselves.
Affordable financial solutions
Through consistent saving and access to affordable financial solutions, Martha has been able to acquire plots of land, undertake development projects and steadily build her asset base. Like many Sacco members, she found in Mentor not just a financial institution, but a reliable partner that could support her ambitions when opportunities arose.“Mentor Sacco has helped me a lot to build myself,” she says. “I have been able to buy plots, I have been able to build and whenever I need money, I can easily access it.”
For Martha, one of the greatest advantages of being a member of Mentor Sacco has been the convenience and accessibility of financial support. Whether responding to an urgent need or pursuing a long-term investment, she has found comfort in knowing that assistance is never far away. Her journey reflects a growing reality among young professionals who are increasingly turning to cooperative financial institutions to achieve goals that may otherwise take years to accomplish through traditional financing channels.Yet beyond the financial products, Martha believes that one of Mentor Sacco’s greatest strengths lies in its commitment to members’ engagement and education.
Deeper understanding
Attending the members’ education and information day in Kimende Comprehensive School (Lari constituency) provided her with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the Sacco’s operations while interacting with fellow members and leadership. The event, which brought together members from across the region, served as a platform for learning, dialogue and networking.
Among the issues that stood out for her was the discussion surrounding the delegate system and the role members play in shaping the future of the financial institution.“Today was a very good day because I learned many things that I did not know before,” she explains. “These forums help us understand how the Sacco is moving and how we, as members, can contribute to its growth.”
While praising the event, she also offered a thoughtful recommendation for future engagements. Given the value of the discussions and the enthusiasm among members, she believes more time should be allocated to allow participants to interact, network and ask questions. Her appreciation for the Sacco extends beyond her own achievements. Today, she finds herself encouraging others to join, drawing from personal experience rather than theory.
Safe environment
For Martha, the recommendation is simple: Mentor Sacco has provided a safe environment to save, invest and grow financially, and she believes more people can benefit from the same opportunities.“I encourage more members to join Mentor Sacco because I have experienced the benefits myself,” she says. “It is a place where your money is safe, where you learn and where you can build your future.”
As Kenya’s cooperative movement continues to evolve, stories like Martha’s illustrate the role Saccos play in helping young professionals transition from earning an income to building wealth. Her journey demonstrates that financial success is often not the result of a single breakthrough, but rather a series of informed decisions supported by the right financial partner. For Martha Wambui Kamau, Mentor Sacco has been a partner that has helped transform ambition into tangible achievement.
