At just a few years into his higher education journey, Stephen Mbiwi Nyala is already taking bold steps towards securing his future. A student at the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, Mbiwi is pursuing a diploma in electrical and electronics engineering with big plans to one day becoming an inventor. “I’ve always been passionate about creating things,” he said on the sidelines of Mentor Sacco members’ education, information and training day in Ruiru. “I want to design solutions that make life better for people, especially in the energy space,” he added.
Alongside his studies, Mbiwi works as an electrician, gaining hands-on experience while earning an income to support his education and financial goals. But it’s not just about the technical skills, Mbiwi understands that financial discipline and planning are just as important on the journey to success.
A mother’s advice that sparked a journey
In 2022, Mbiwi made an important decision that would become a key part of his growth story: he joined Mentor Sacco. “My mother referred me to Mentor Sacco,” he recalls. “She told me it was a solid Sacco, and since she had invested share capital and non-withdrawable deposits in the institution, I felt it was a smart move. It was an opportunity to learn and grow not just financially, but personally.”
Indeed, Mbiwi’s story is a testament that financial literacy and empowerment can start early, and with the right support, young people can begin to build solid foundations for the future.
Quick Fix Loans
Among the Sacco’s products, one that has especially helped Mbiwi is the digital loan product dubbed ‘ quick fix.’ It is designed for fast access to funds in times of need. “I’ve taken a few digital loans and they have really helped me to address pressing needs,” he shared. “Quick fix is an innovative product. I always encourage fellow youth to use it—but more importantly, to pay on time so they can keep benefiting from it.”
Mbiwi added that patronizing Sacco products not only helps in meeting urgent needs, but also brings long-term rewards. “As a member, you earn dividends on your share capital and interest on your non-withdrawable deposits every year,” he emphasized.
The power of belonging and mentorship
One of the most impactful moments for Mbiwi was attending the members’ education, information and training day in Ruiru that was hosted by Mentor Sacco. “It was a really good programme,” he said. “We had a motivational speaker who was incredibly smart and inspiring. I also got an opportunity to meet other members, exchange contacts, and build new networks.”
For Mbiwi, the event not only offered information but it also fostered a sense of belonging. “Mentor Sacco feels like home,” he said. “The staff members are warm, helpful, and genuinely invested in your growth.”
A Message to fellow youth
Mbiwi is passionate about encouraging other young people to make informed financial choices early in life. “I invite all youth to join Mentor Sacco,” he said. “It’s a good Sacco. It can help you access loans, earn dividends, grow your savings, and most importantly, it can mentor you to become a better person in the future.”
With a strong vision, practical skills, and the right financial partner by his side, Mbiwi’s future looks bright. His story is a powerful reminder that young people don’t need to wait until they are older or wealthier to start building their dreams. With access, accountability, and ambition, the future belongs to the bold.
