Safaricom Surpasses 50 Million Customers as It Prepares to Mark 25 Years of Innovation

In a landmark moment that underscores its enduring impact on Kenya’s digital evolution, Safaricom PLC has officially surpassed 50 million customers on its mobile network. The announcement comes as the telecommunications giant gears up for its 25th anniversary celebrations set for October 2025, a Silver Jubilee that will not only reflect on a transformative legacy but also chart the course for the future of digital connectivity in Kenya and beyond.

A Journey of Trust and Transformation

What began in 2000 with just 17,000 customers has evolved into a technology powerhouse at the heart of Kenyan life. Safaricom’s growth trajectory mirrors the country’s own digital journey, one marked by innovation, accessibility, and purpose-led growth.

“We are honoured by the trust that over 50 million Kenyans have placed in us,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom PLC. “This milestone reflects the deep connection we have built with Kenyans over the past two and a half decades, and as we approach our silver jubilee, we recommit ourselves to always being a force for good and creating what’s next for our customers.”

Driving Growth Through Customer-Centric Innovation

Much of Safaricom’s recent momentum is credited to its year-long customer engagement campaign, which has brought services, rewards, and celebrations closer to communities across Kenya. Initiatives like Sambaza Furaha and M-PESA Sokoni have enabled the company to engage meaningfully with customers and express appreciation in a tangible way.

This customer-first philosophy has also defined the evolution of M-PESA, Safaricom’s revolutionary mobile money platform. What began as a simple money transfer service has grown into a robust digital financial ecosystem powering businesses, households, and entire communities.

Expanding Horizons: Safaricom in Ethiopia

Safaricom’s ambition isn’t limited to Kenya. In a testament to its regional vision, the company recently crossed 10 million customers in Ethiopia—a major milestone just two years into operations. This achievement is not just a business win; it signals the viability of expanding Kenyan innovation across Africa.

Economic Impact Beyond Connectivity

The company’s impact goes far beyond mobile services. In the last financial year alone, Safaricom contributed an impressive KES 722 billion to the Kenyan economy, supporting over 1.28 million jobs. Through the Safaricom Foundation and M-PESA Foundation, over 8 million Kenyans have benefitted from projects in healthcare, education, and economic empowerment — all designed to uplift and connect communities.

Moreover, Safaricom has consistently pioneered next-generation technology infrastructure, being the first to introduce 3G, 4G, and 5G in Kenya. It has also extended high-speed internet to homes and businesses, supporting the country’s digital transformation goals.

The Road to 2030: Purpose-Led Tech Leadership

As Safaricom sets its sights on becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, the focus is clear: deepen impact, personalise customer experiences, and drive inclusive digital growth.

“Our journey has always been about putting customers first,” Dr. Ndegwa added. “Looking ahead, our next chapter will be about personalising customer experiences and deepening our contribution to Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.”
