How one woman’s move from Nairobi to Kenol led to financial empowerment and community support
When Rebecca Kathambi Mugo relocated from Nairobi to Kenol; during the COVID-19 pandemic, little did she know that this move would not only change her physical location but also open new doors to financial growth and stability through Mentor Sacco.
A woman of dual purpose
Kathambi wears two professional hats. As a nutrition consultant, she monitors and evaluates donor-funded agricultural projects, ensuring they positively impact household nutrition. Simultaneously, she runs a thriving business, supplying fish to households, restaurants, and hotels. Her ability to manage both ventures is driven by discipline and a strong desire for financial independence, a value she found echoed in the ethos of Mentor Sacco.
Joining Mentor Sacco
She became a member of Mentor Sacco in 2022, influenced by friends she met at Kenol. “I joined Mentor Sacco in 2022… the friends I met here, all of them were talking good of Mentor Sacco. I said, okay, because you’ve really pushed me, let me join, let me see the experience that I will have. And for sure, I haven’t been disappointed,” she says.
Initially, Kathambi only channeled her consultancy income through Mentor Saco, However, after attending the members’ education, training and information day in Kenol town, she made a crucial decision to start channeling her business funds through Mentor Sacco as well. This marked a major step in her financial journey.
A home built on Sacco support
Among her proudest milestones is securing a loan from Mentor Sacco, which has helped her nearly complete her family house. Unlike her previous experience in other Saccos, Kathambi has found community, accessibility, and support in her new locale. The people around her have formed a reliable network that has uplifted her financially and socially.
Planting seeds for future generations
Kathambi is a mother of four and is determined to inculcate financial discipline and a savings culture in her children. She plans to open Mentor junior accounts for all of them, hoping to lay a strong foundation for their future financial health.
Take action now!
To the youth and aspiring entrepreneurs, Kathambi delivers a powerful message of urgency and opportunity: “Please don’t wait any longer, act now. Put a deadline, say by this day, I’m going to visit Mentor sacco and open an account or register for membership.”
Her journey is a compelling reflection of how the right financial partner can support not only individual lives but entire households. With a clear vision and supportive ecosystem, Kathambi is proof that prosperity is well within reach for those who dare to take the first step.
