Kenya Advances AI Readiness with Launch of This is Digital AI Literacy Program

On July 16, 2025, This is Digital, a Kenyan digital empowerment platform, marked a significant milestone with the official launch of its AI Literacy Program. This announcement came during an exclusive AI Appreciation Breakfast held at The Social House, Nairobi, themed “The Age of AI: A Reality Check”. The event also aligned with the global celebration of International Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day.

Kenya’s standing in AI readiness is steadily climbing, currently ranked 6th in Africa according to the Oxford Insights AI Readiness Index 2024. Yet, as the world pivots towards AI-driven economies, Kenya is pushing forward to ensure its workforce and institutions are prepared to harness AI responsibly and effectively.

Gathering of Kenya’s Digital and Policy Leaders

The breakfast meeting convened prominent figures across technology, policy, academia, and industry. Moses Kemibaro of Dotsavvy delivered a compelling keynote on Africa’s AI landscape, stressing the need for professionals to adapt swiftly or risk obsolescence in an AI-powered global market.

Additional insights came from Susan Makau of the International School of Advertising, who explored AI’s disruption of marketing, while Roseline Njogu, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, called for proactive policy frameworks to guide Kenya’s AI integration.

A Cross-Sector Panel on AI’s Real-World Impact

A standout session was the expert panel discussion that translated AI theory into practical applications:

  • Eugene Mbugua (D&R Studios) shared how AI is revolutionizing content creation and storytelling in Kenya’s media landscape.
  • Caroline Kendi (CK Marketing) unpacked how data and AI are redefining precision marketing strategies.
  • Dr. Catherine Gathu (Aga Khan University) explored AI’s role in enhancing healthcare diagnostics and personalized treatments.
  • Philip Muigai (Cloud Factory) discussed AI’s impact on human resources, particularly in skills assessments and workforce planning.

Introducing the AI Literacy Program

The highlight of the event was the formal unveiling of the This is Digital AI Literacy Program; an educational initiative crafted to demystify AI for professionals, students, educators, and entrepreneurs. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, focusing on ethical AI, innovation, and real-world application.

Participants can choose between:

  • Online Bootcamp: A virtual series running every Tuesday in August (5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th) from 7 PM to 9 PM.
  • In-Person Bootcamp: An immersive experience scheduled for August 27th to 29th in Nairobi.

To ensure continuous learning, the program will also host monthly cohorts starting from September 2025.

Why AI Literacy Matters Now

As industries worldwide evolve with AI at their core, understanding and leveraging this technology is no longer optional. The This is Digital AI Literacy Program addresses a pressing need for skills development in Kenya, ensuring that the workforce is equipped to lead innovation, enhance sustainability, and drive inclusive economic growth.

Kenyans and Africans at large are encouraged to enroll and future-proof their careers. Whether in healthcare, finance, marketing, education, or creative industries, AI literacy is critical to staying relevant in the fast-changing digital economy.
