The list of locally available materials that will no longer be imported in the country is set to be expanded by the government.
According to the Cabinet Secretary Trade and Industrialization Peter Munya , the technical committee of Permanent Secretaries is working on an indepth report to guide the implementation of the government’s Buy Kenya, Build Kenya initiative.
“The list is ready and will be shared to the public in due course,” Munya said.
Munya says the country’s top executives met recently to conclude on the products that support the Buy Kenya, Build Kenya initiative without any form of bias.
“ We have not been biased in selection of the products, the technical committee, and the PS retreated to conclude on the list and the white paper that will say in local content trading these are the commodities and the list will continue to increase as we do more research on other products that can be made locally,” he commented.
The news comes barely a month after the government announced to take strict measures against civil servants who will import vehicles that are assembled locally
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said the move is in line with the president’s directive made early this year, requiring ministries and other state agencies to buy locally assembled vehicles.
Following the directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta that all national security agency uniforms be made at the NYS factory in Ruaraka, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’ i said the government was saving over Sh700 million besides enabling graduates from the service to get employment.
