The Sparkassen Foundation for international Cooperation; a member of the largest German banking group – The German Savings Banks Finance Group (Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe) is in the process of registering as an international non-governmental organization in Kenya to support promotion of sustainable financial inclusion.

Sparkassen Foundation’s core competencies are Financial Literary, Capacity Development, MSME Finance, Institution Building, Rural Development and Green Finance. Since its establishment in 1992, Sparkassen Foundation has been working in projects to support further development of financial systems, mainly in the microfinance sector in more than 80 countries all over the globe. The Foundation has been in operation in the Eastern Africa market since 2009 and is currently operating in four countries, namely Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

The Foundation is directly commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung) with the execution of the above-named projects in East Africa. In fact-finding missions carried out in Kenya earlier this year, Memorandums of Understanding with Kenyan partner organizations could be agreed on: The African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Kenya (AMFI), and the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), all based in Nairobi, are ready to partner with our organisation.

The vision of Sparkassen Foundation for international Cooperation in Eastern Africa is to improve livelihoods by sustainably promoting financial inclusion. In our Mission we state that we are leading consultants and partners for the financial retail service sector in Eastern Africa. Based on the expertise of Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation we support building the capacity of our partner institutions to become self-sustainable and professional organizations, thus assisting them to enhance economic opportunities for the poor.

The objective of Sparkassen Foundation is to enhance the professionalization of our partner institutions and their members – MFIs/SACCOs, empowering them to offer their clients/members sustainable access to financial services and increasing their profitability. Sparkassen Foundation also has a keen interest in building the capacity of micro, small and medium enterprises and low income earners to grow into profitable self-sustaining units. Focusing on the business operations of MSME sector and low-income earners has a direct benefit to partner institutions themselves since their profitability directly affects the institutions’ sustainability through better loan repayment and quality loan books.
